COVID-19 has disrupted our daily routines, but it has also had a few positive effects. You have probably simplified your life, and you may like what that is doing for your health and relationships.

For example, 59% of fathers said they feel closer to their sons and daughters as the result of complying with coronavirus restrictions. That is according to one survey by the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation.

Many of them also told the researcher personnel that they want to stay more engaged in the future but realize that will be challenging when they restart commuting and working long hours.

Is the pandemic helping you to get back to basics? Try these tips for doing more with less and enjoying simple pleasures.

Bonding with Family

Sheltering under the same roof can be stressful, but it can also strengthen your relationships. Treat your loved ones with respect and kindness and appreciate them.

Try these techniques:

  1. Talk more. Some of the most rewarding conversations you will have with your child happen naturally when you are doing things together. Give them more of your time and attention.
  2. Share responsibilities. Chores prepare children for adulthood and allow them to contribute to family life. Build their self-esteem by letting them in charge of an age appropriate task.
  3. Resolve conflicts. You are bound to disagree sometimes. Be willing to compromise and agree on house rules.
  4. Have fun. Enjoy each other’s company. Do crafts and play board games. Find a hobby you all can work on together or at least in the same room.

Staying Fit

Some news sources say that Americans are gaining weight and exercising less. Others say working out and good nutrition are on the rise. Whichever description fits you is really up to you.

You can make wholesome choices with these strategies:

  1. Eat healthy. Cooking at home gives you more control over portion size and ingredients. Stock your kitchen with fresh whole foods. Limit snacking and plan your menus.
  2. Head outdoors. Working out seems less effortful and green spaces lift your spirits. Play catch in your backyard or go for a run. Research nearby trails and parks where your family can keep a safe distance.
  3. Design a home gym. Set aside a space for strength and cardio training. You can do body weight exercises if you have minimal equipment.
  4. Practice self-care. Safeguard your mental and physical wellbeing. Prioritize physical activity, sleep, and nutrition. Repeat comforting affirmations and think positive.

Finding Your Purpose

An opportunity to build character occurs as you are dealing with hardship. Use your extra free time to create a more abundant meaningful life.

Consider these ideas:

  1. Meditate and pray. Invest in your spiritual development. Start a daily meditation practice. Read inspirational texts. Browse online for videos and podcasts that many faith-based communities are offering.
  2. Help others. Changing your attention to others can help you to keep your own troubles in perspective. Ask your favorite charity about how to volunteer online. See if your elderly neighbors need an occasional phone call or groceries. Do this safely keeping the COVID-19 from spreading.
  3. Continue learning. Make a list of topics you want to explore for your career advancement or personal enrichment. Take courses online and read books. See what your local library has to offer through curbside services or on their website.
  4. Limit screen time. Resist the temptation to binge watch TV movies and shows. Save your energy and time for activities with a greater pay off.

You are probably eager to send your kids off to school and share a meal with close friends. On the other hand, the pandemic restrictions may have introduced some positive changes that you will want to continue. Simple living makes you healthier and happier even when you start cutting back out of necessity.
